This incredible base layer is the latest offering from ICON Sports, launched January 2024 and features TECNOSTRETCH™ fabric technology.  ICON's pedigree in water sports such as surfski and kayaking means that they know more than anyone about exercising in a seated position in cold and wet condition and, as usual this piece is perfectly suited to cycling.

In fact, this thermal baselayer is a game changer when it comes to cycling. It is so warm, breathable and stretchy in fit, that when worn under your existing cycling jacket, it can transform it into one suitable for sub-zero conditions.

The new 'skin-fit' base layer sets unprecedented standards in warmth, flexibility, fit and comfort for riding in cold conditions. The seamless under-arm breathable 'Nilo' fabric panel provides excellent comfort when worn under other exterior layers and the stretch fit ensures it can be worn like a second skin and not compromise your comfort on the bike. The added length at the rear also ensures it can be tucked well into your bib-tights.

Tecnostretch is manufactured by Italian fabric manufacturer, Pontetorto. It is best known for its use as a layering system fabric in technical outdoor apparel. Icon especially chose Tecnostretch to wick away sweat from the brush fleeced inner lining. "This helps keep your body warm, dry and comfortable during the most intense activity… and/or weather! Perfect for winter training!

    Poor wicking

I bought this item recently and have ridden with it on two occaions and with different winter jackets. Each ride was over an almost identical loop of 60km at an avs of 27kph. The ride was dry and sunny with slight to moderate winds - one at 8C and the other at 11C. On both ocsasions I found the thermal quality was poor and most importantly it doesn't adequately wick moisture from perspiration.
The garment itself, when dry feels very cosy and soft against the skin, but by the end of these rides it was damp and clinging to my body. Disappointed at this price (£55.00) point.

    Hi Eddie,

Thanks for your thoughts on this technial base layer. The base is not designed to warm like a merino (or equiavlent)) wool style layer, and is designed to work at performance levels, regulating the body temperature when working hard, supplemented with an appropriate second or third layer as would suit a riders specific physiology, ride effort, planned warmth needs. Wicking base layers are designed to 'regulate', not warm. Then that regulation controls how the other layers then do their job. The fact it was damp, illustrates it was doing the job it was designed to actually do.

We're very happy that this base is an excellent garment, and it may not be appropriate for you perhaps? We'd be happy to take it back for a credit or Gift Card.
