The team's first big success was Roberto Visentini’s Giro d'Italia victory in 1986. In 1985 the team signed Stephen Roche, to challenge at the Tour de France. Roche won the Tour de Romandie just ahead of the 87 Giro d'Italia and became the number one favourite for the maglia rosa. As defending champion, team leader, Visentini, wasn’t happy. Their rivalry came to a head during the race when Roche attacked Visentini. Roche went on to win the race and then the 1987 Tour de France.
Claudio Chiappucci rose from riding domestique duties for Visentini and Roche to becoming team leader. Chiappucci led the 1990 Tour de France finishing the race second overall and famously battled Miguel Indurain in the 1992 edition. Chiappucci also won Milan–San Remo in 1991.
